Yesterday at the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas, Epic Games‘ founder and Technical Director, Tim Sweeney, took the stage for his presentation “Technology and Gaming in the Next 20 Years.” Tim started his presentation talking about the limitations of human physiology and said that our eyes are like 30-megapixel cameras. He said that framerates become imperceptible to us after 72 frames per second. The highest resolution we need is 8000×4000 pixels. The technology isn’t here yet, but it’s coming soon. Tim continued to talk about what lies ahead and said “Our industry’s brightest days are yet to come.”
Tim was also the 16th inductee into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) Hall of Fame. Tim is respected throughout the industry for his technological innovations, advancing many of today’s highly successful PC, console and mobile games. Tim’s development of the Unreal Engine and award-winning franchises such as the “Gears of War” and “Unreal Tournament” series have been catalysts in the evolution of gaming.
The AIAS Hall of Fame is bestowed on game creators who have been instrumental in the development of highly influential games and moving a particular genre forward. These individuals demonstrate the highest level of creativity and innovation, resulting in significant product influence on a scale that expands the scope of the industry. The 2012 Hall of Fame Award was presented yesterday by Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein at the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. The Awards were hosted by actor, comedian and game enthusiast, Jay Mohr. Gamespot recorded the event and you can see it in it’s entirety HERE.
Also from D.I.C.E., Epic Games vice president Mark Rein confirmed we would be seeing more of Unreal Engine 4 this year. “People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have,” Rein said.
