Epic After Hours: Bill Green

A lot of the folks who work at Epic have amazing talents and hobbies outside of the work they do here. This week, we’re going to kick off a new feature that will allow you to take a look at what some of us are doing outside of the office. This week, our Epic After Hours subject is Senior Environment Artist, Bill Green.

Bill is a devoted husband and father and was an NCAA D1 high jumper in college. He grew up in the Ozarks of Arkansas and is a real outdoors-man. He once spent a summer in Alaska with his father; fishing for salmon and enjoying the scenery. Bill also sketches, and his work is fantastic. It seems his talent is without bounds.

Bill is also an amazing photographer, and I had a chance to interview him about his hobby. You may remember seeing his work before in this Sam Byrne Cosplay photo shoot.

Flak: When did you start taking photographs?

Bill Green: I started taking photos about three years ago on cars.  I saw some photos online of cars and they really inspired me.  So I went over to Best Buy and picked up a Nikon D90 and started shooting my own car for a little while.

F: Do you do a lot of retouching?

BG: It depends on the photo.  Sometimes I get the shot just like I want it and sometimes I edit them a little.  Like I will usually try and adjust the mood of the photo in an edit.  With people I will edit them a little, but nothing more than mild touch-ups.

F: Could you explain a little of your process?

BG: With cars I like to meet up with the owner and discuss location.  Sometimes car owners don’t want to put any miles on the cars, so we will shoot at the location of the car.

Sometimes we will end up out on the highway with me hanging out the back of a minivan trying to get really dramatic shots.  With people I tend to find really interesting locations.  Like abandoned houses or beautiful fields with flowers.  It depends on the shoot that we want to take.

F: Do you have any other hobbies?

BG: I do like to fish and draw and spend time with the family.  We like to go spend time in the mountains or at the beach, and when I am at those locations then I always bring my camera.  We find some really interesting locations in the mountains.

Lots of abandoned buildings that are super creepy, but so fun to shoot.  I also love cars! I go to car shows and I have been fortunate enough to own a few fun cars. Basketball is also another passion I have.  I used to play all of the time and when I was not playing I was watching Michael Jordan.  Now I play when I get the chance, but not nearly as often.

F: What are some of the things you have done at Epic?

BG: At Epic my primary thing that I do is modeling and texturing.  Every now and then I get to shoot things for Epic; I got to shoot the Retro Lancer and the Limited Edition Marcus statue.  One of the statue images ended up on the box and I was extremely excited about that.

F: How long have you been at Epic?

BG: Just over 7 years :)

F: Thank you Bill!!
