Muck Ruckus Team Profile: Mike Capps and GOWCharity Stream

Today, Epic Games President Mike Capps took time out of his hectic schedule to talk to us a little bit about running and the Muck Ruckus charity event he and his wife, Julianne are participating in this weekend.

Flak: Is this your first charity run?

Mike Capps: I do about a dozen races a year, and almost every race is a charity run these days.  My biggest effort was running the New York Marathon for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  I raised almost 20k, largely through the generosity of employees at Epic and colleagues in the games industry.

F: What are you looking forward too?

Mike Capps New York Marathon Muck RuckusMVC: Being crazy muddy.  It’s the sort of thing you avoid whenever possible, but once you don’t have a choice, you get to surrender yourself to the messy.

F: Your Muck Ruckus shoes; wash or toss?

MVC: I’m a gadget nerd, so I of course have hardcore gore-tex trail running shoes that I expect will perform under pressure!

F: Tell us something we don’t know about your running career?

MVC: My first road race was the Peachtree 10k in Atlanta when I was 14.  My dad bet me $100 I couldn’t train for it with him and finish it without stopping.  Luckily my stubborn streak created a life-long passion.

F: How are you preparing for Muck Ruckus?

MVC: Pull-ups!  I can run the course a few times, but I don’t want to be a liability on obstacles.

F: What motivates you?

MVC: Chocolate.  Beer.  Mmm, chocolate beer…

GOWCharity Marathon!

The Dedicated Servers crew will put on another  GOWCharity event to help raise awareness and funds for the Epic Games MuckRuckus team. On June 15th Epic Games and Insomniac Games will be represented by some of its biggest developers and staff in the 2012 MuckRuckus event. The MuckRuckus event is a 5 Mile military-style run covered in mud. The money raised during these events goes directly to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Dedicated Servers will do a micro GOWCharity marathon this weekend in support! They will be playing 8 hours of Horde and Beast, so feel free to stop by and watch at www.twitch.tv/dedicatedservers. They will try to have some of the team members on hand to say hello. Be sure to cheer them on!

They will be streaming from Noon Friday – 8 pm EST

So bummed, literally hours after this was posted I broke my collarbone playing on Epic’s soccer team (By Design). I won’t be able to participate this year. Thanks everyone for the donations you have made, I will step it up and earn them next year.

What a fun day this was! I met Pete and saw the EPIC Gamers crew while I was there. I wanted to take a photo with the guys but I was to nervous to ask. Nevertheless Pete was really cool and didn’t seemed bothered by me walking up (a stranger) and introducing myself. Thanks for the chat and I hope you guys enjoyed as much as I did. Maybe I can get a photo next time.
