UT3 Patch Allows You to Play After Gamespy Shutdown

ut3_akashaAs you may have heard, Gamespy is shutting down this weekend. We want to be sure you’re still able to play Unreal Tournament 3 Multiplayer. Thanks to community member Shambler, we have a patch that will allow you to continue playing. We also want to thank all of the server admins and other community members who have helped test the patch to be sure it’s ready to go. (We’re looking at you Bubbaxm2, the nOx guys and Hedsteem!)

If you have any questions, please join in the conversation over at the Epic Forums: https://forums.epicgames.com/threads/986045-Gamespy-Patch-Info

IMPORTANT TECHNICAL STUFFS: This “patch” is actually a replacement executable that will direct you to the new Unreal Tournament 3 master server which we have moved to the Epic Games server bank along with the Unreal Tournament 99 and Unreal Tournament 2004 servers.

In Windows, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries and simply drag and drop the new UT3.exe into this folder. When the screen pops up asking what to do, select move and replace. This will replace the old .exe file with the new one. You will now be directed to the new master server when you start your game.

This patch will also work with the Steam version of the game.  You will need to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries, or just search for your Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries folder and replace the UT3.exe file with the new one.

In Unreal Tournament 3, you will need to recreate your user name on the new master server. We are very sorry for this inconvenience, but all currently registered names will go away along with Gamespy. You can use the same names as before and even the same passwords, you just need to have them registered on the new server now instead of Gamespy.

This will also apply to servers! This will apply to servers as well, they will need to have the new .exe and all Gamespy usernames will need to be recreated or replaced in the command line as well. The larger server providers should be able to handle this for you but please contact your provider if you are unsure. In the event that you run your own server on your own box, you will need to patch this as well. There is a separate patch for servers.

    • AutoPsychotic

      Fantastic. Good call, Epic Community!

    • iFlak

      Thank you AutoPsychotic!

    • rek

rek approved news! i checked out the official vctf server last night and everything is great!

      • iFlak

Great to hear rek, thank you!

    • Max

Good to hear there’s a fix. Couple quick q’s: Is there a reason the Steam version of the game can’t apply the patch automatically? And is there a similar process for UT2k4/UT99, steam versions or otherwise?

      • iFlak

        Hi Max,

We have sent the file to Steam and hope they have it live soon. There is no need to patch UT99 or UT2K4, they will just continue to work.

      • Salvador Arias

the patch just went live on steam

    • NaelAM

Applied this to the Steam version. Works great for multiplayer, but the textures for the main menu’s background are not loading. Minor issues but I’d love to know how to fix it.

      • iFlak

I’m not having that issue here Nael, I’ll check into it.

        • NaelAM

Weird. Sorry for the late response, but I tried restarting my computer, restoring the old version and reapplying the patched EXE, and changing video settings and the background is still white and textureless. Not sure what’s going on here, but it’s not affecting actual games, so that’s good at least.

          • Liquid Aurum

It’s only in the menu? hmm. You’re right good thing it’s not in game

        • NaelAM

So I wanted to follow up on this issue – it turns out this issue was being caused by an outdated version of SweetFX (SMAA injector + image quality tweaking tool) I threw into the game directory. Deleting SweetFX cleared up the problem. So it was on my end – oops!

      • iFlak

Have you tried rebooting Nael? Everyone seemed to be fine on the server I was on.

    • Jon

When you say we have to reregister our usernames, does that mean someone could technically get a username someone else once used?

      • iFlak

That is correct Jon. It’s a new master server so you should patch and grab your name as soon as you can.

    • n/a

I’m able to play online without applying the patch. I’m confused :)

      • iFlak

Gamespy hasn’t pulled the trigger yet, but it could be at any time.

    • jabman

This is great for PC gamers but what about the ones on consoles. Will the servers be saved for PS3 and Xbox 360?

    • Bruce

Will the patch role out through Steam itself? IE: Every time I reinstall the game on Steam, will I keep having to apply the patch?

      • Bruce

I noticed that the is a beta option. Is that the patch? If so, will it it be out of beta and part of the regular version some time?

    • ktn

the multiplayer option seems to work BUT … dont think i can either host a co-op game or add a friend into the friends list … unless i need some other file for that or needa play with port forwarding (which i dont wanna do cause this just has to work as i like to click on it or go for instant play) … anyone ?

      • MrGenKenobi

same, would like to play some co-op but it shows me error about DMZ servers and ports

    • rabbit-with-c4

      people play ut3…?

    • platnumSpider

thanks for all the hard work. ——-the nOx clan

    • Ruk

I used this for the Steam version, but all the servers that come up are filled with bots and there’s only one server with actual people on it, is that normal?

    • dropstep

after dropping the patch, I get a message, the online service is currently unavailable. Where to recreate my account? ty

    • Alex Listengort

Does it mean that my player’s Stats and also friends list is now clear? Guess we should create a new account to continue playing?
Anyways, thanks for the Online game that is available still

    • T-Deep

It would be awesome if they would also find a solution for PS3 Players. :S

    • Im Iskadogz

Sad for all thos eplayers that doesn’t know aout this with gamespy shutdown :( UT3 will be more empty than it was, but thanks for the patch epic guys :)

    • Jeremy Little

      now… the ps3 version?

    • dropstep

the patch doesn’t work for me.

    • Matt Dymond

Will there be a patch for the PS3 version? So many online trophies unable to obtain because of this.

    • dropstep

      says sever unavailable

    • dropstep

online service is currently unavailable. Overwriting the oem ut3.exe hasn’t worked for me in 20 attempts. Can we create the game accounts directly from fps hosting website?

    • dropstep

it was my avg firewall causing the problem. I disabled it and all is good now.

    • donguzman

I get so frustrated with these patches, I tried downloading and installing but doesn’t allow with same old error missing some dill or another (wxmsw262u.dill) I really wish that they would get this right I mean I understand its a service but spending hours on trying to figure out how to run this patch is not my idea of help its torture.
      Anyone know how to fix?

I tried running it with 7zip, winzip, it’s a rar file and should open without a problem.
Man what a colossal waste of time and energy.

    • Odan

Of course we’re plying UT3…are there any other games? TITAAAN’s in your base !!! :) Ah and don’t forget to install MapMixer. A must!
