DSC03737Last week, The Fortnite team received a special treat from Kelly Haskell, the mother of Cody Haskell, a programmer on the Fortnite Team. How did the cake come to be? Read on to find out!

Flak: How long have you been making cakes?

Kelly Haskell: Over 35 yrs. I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in cooking and baking. I loved my Easy Bake Oven! When my oldest nephew was born, I made his first birthday cake and it just snowballed. I’ve baked many cakes for nieces and nephews over the years and now I’m making cakes for their kids!

F: Have they always been so detailed?

KH: No, not nearly so in the beginning. The public library was my best resource back then to try new techniques and I’m still learning today from all of the great shows on TV.

F: What was the first “designer cake” you made?DSC03732

KH: A hand-painted 8 pt. white-tailed buck for my Dad.

F: What made you decide to create the Fortnite cake?

KH: That’s an easy answer – Cody!

Plus, I really love the creative process of every cake I make. I knew this cake had to be Epic! I was excited about the chance to do things with this cake I hadn’t done before. The array characters and fun look of Fortnite made it easy to translate to cake.

F: How long did it take you to make?

KH: When I get the “theme” for a cake, I have to think about it for awhile. I’ve sort of already assembled it in my mind before I actually start anything. The “construction” and baking for the Fortnite cake was around one and a half months.

F: Could you explain a little of the process?

DSC03738KH: For the Fortnite characters, I started by building a wire armatures, then gluing and wiring in LEDs. Everything was covered in gum paste, which starts as a sculpt-able edible clay that hardens when it dries. Then they were painted. One larger character had almost five lbs. of gum paste on him, so he was a bit tricky to anchor.

The portal was made by draping gum paste pieces over balloons. Using a “fire” LED set in the center, I stuck the hardened pieces together with the same gum paste. DurrrBurger has a rice crispy base also covered in gum paste. I really enjoyed making the Husk characters, but those extra heads were tough! The Troll was trouble – the only one damaged on the trip down from MI!

Since this was the largest and most electrified cake I’ve ever made, Cody and my husband lent a much needed helping hand in the final assembly and transport to Epic to surprise the Fortnite team.

F: Where can people get in touch with you if they would like to have a cake made?

KH: Anyone interested can contact me at dkhaskell@gmail.com

Thank you Kelly!

Future of the Shooter Panel at Escapist ExpoLast weekend the Epic Games crew attended the inaugural Escapist Expo in Durham, NC.  As a part of our gold sponsorship of the event, fans were able to register for the 4 v 4 Gears of War 3 tournament for free on Saturday.  We also had Multiplayer Designer Quinn DelHoyo and Lead Level Designer Jim Brown on hand to emcee the event and meet fans.

Also on Saturday Quinn and Jim shared their thoughts about the shooter genre on the “Future of the Shooter” panel along with developers from Insomniac Games and Red Storm.  The panelists shared some really interesting thoughts about shooters using virtual reality-type technology in the future or incorporating other genres to include all types of players.

Epic Games playing against the fans at Escapist ExpoPrior to the tournament Quinn, Jim, QA Testers Brian Roberts and Donald White all faced off as a team against players that wanted to try their hand at beating the Gears 3 developers.  There was also an autograph signing with the Epic Games team and fans were treated to Gears of War: Judgment posters and Fortnite Durrrburger hats.  There were lots of great Gears of War cosplayers at the event as well including an Anya Stroud, Sam Byrne, Marcus Fenix and Onyx Guard.
