Fan Fiction from Epic Gamers

Epic Gamer and forum member TheRealBigBoss has been very active in the Story and Character forum since June of 2007. Not only does he write, he also creates cover art and banners for many of the writers on the forum. He recently compiled a thread of some of the best fan fiction on the forums. Today the boss gets the spotlight as we feature his short story, The Promise.

There is also a monthly writing contest on the forum, where members can win a copy of a Gears of War novel signed by Karen Traviss.

We want to put you in the spotlight, through posts on the Epic Games Community Site, our Facebook pages and the forums. We want people to see how awesome Epic Gamers are! Head over to the Epic Gamers Forum and show us your content. Who knows, you may be the next Epic Gamer on our front page!

The Promise

A grizzled and scarred Gears veteran, an inexperienced Raven pilot, a whole lot of Grubs, and… a promise.

Kelly opened her eyes. Though it was hard to tell in the gloomy half darkness, it looked as though she was in a small kitchen of a dusty apartment. Empty used food cans were stacked by the sink, cobweb filled open presses lined the walls, and a broken breakfast table with two wooden chairs stood alone in the center of the room. Kelly felt a hand touch her shoulder and she jumped, letting out a small yelp as she did so.

“Relax Private, I’m on your side. Name’s Mortis, Sergeant Mortis Clay.” Kelly looked up to see a heavily scarred face staring down at her. The man was bald with gray armor and he cradled a shotgun in his arms as though it were a small child.”Sorry.. it’s just… last thing I remember was my Raven being fired on and going down.”

“Yeah, you’re lucky I got to you in time and pulled you out. Damn thing nearly blew up in my face, and hell, the last thing I need is more scar tissue.” Clay smiled a half smile, but the joke seemed to be lost on the young pilot. She peered at the floor where she was sat, head down, strands of her long blond fringe covering her face. Clay thought he heard sobbing. Shaking his head, he pulled her upright by her arm.

Epic Gamers: Crimson Omen Coffee Table

Crimson Omen Coffee TableWhat to you get when you cross a wooden cable spool, some black and red paint and some ingenuity? Well if you’re Do-it-yourselfer and Epic Gamer Heath Ross aka WarzonesHeathen on the Epic Forums, you just might wind up with a Crimson Omen coffee table. You can find the spools at local factories, cable installers and telephone companies.

Before painting and decorating your found spool be sure to hammer down any nails that are sticking out. You might also want to sand the side of the spool you’ll be using for the top. Also, sand down any rough edges.

Crimson Omen Coffee TableIt is also good to use something to raise the bottom of the table to keep air circulating under the table. This will help to avoid mold and rotting. For painting, use outdoor semi-gloss oil-base paint. Be sure to let it dry a few days before bringing it indoors.

You can also use the center of the spool to hold an outdoor umbrella to make a great table for your deck or patio.

Heath drew the COG Gear on the spool freehand, then used a jigsaw to cut off the sections that weren’t needed. After that, a base go of gloss red paint was applied across the top and bottom sections and black over the middle. Crimson Omen Coffee Table

While the paint was drying. Heath drew the skull on paper (you can also use posterboard) and cut out the areas that are black in the logo. He laid his new stencil on the top of the now dried spool. He then carefully painted in the black areas, removed the stencil and performed some touch up.

Heath and his girlfriend are huge Gears of War fans and play Gears of War 3 every day.

We love the finished product!

Recognizing Outstanding Community Members

Some of our Epic Gamers go above and beyond when it comes to helping others. We have people spending their time answering questions and helping others in the UDK forum, members helping members become better players in the gaming forums, artists sharing their secrets to success and people posting tutorials, helpful hints and tricks.

We would like to call attention to these community superstars! We will be implementing a way to recognize these members on the forum so everyone knows they have contributed to our growing community. Starting this week, these members will be an image that will appear under their forum name. So far we have images for people who have helped the community, Unreal MVPs for the UDK forum and Featured Epic Gamers for those who have been featured on our community site after posting content to the Epic Gamers forum. We’ve also added two “Epic Gamer” avatars to the forums for anyone to use.
