Epic Gamer and forum member TheRealBigBoss has been very active in the Story and Character forum since June of 2007. Not only does he write, he also creates cover art and banners for many of the writers on the forum. He recently compiled a thread of some of the best fan fiction on the forums. Today the boss gets the spotlight as we feature his short story, The Promise.
There is also a monthly writing contest on the forum, where members can win a copy of a Gears of War novel signed by Karen Traviss.

A grizzled and scarred Gears veteran, an inexperienced Raven pilot, a whole lot of Grubs, and… a promise.
Kelly opened her eyes. Though it was hard to tell in the gloomy half darkness, it looked as though she was in a small kitchen of a dusty apartment. Empty used food cans were stacked by the sink, cobweb filled open presses lined the walls, and a broken breakfast table with two wooden chairs stood alone in the center of the room. Kelly felt a hand touch her shoulder and she jumped, letting out a small yelp as she did so.
“Relax Private, I’m on your side. Name’s Mortis, Sergeant Mortis Clay.” Kelly looked up to see a heavily scarred face staring down at her. The man was bald with gray armor and he cradled a shotgun in his arms as though it were a small child.”Sorry.. it’s just… last thing I remember was my Raven being fired on and going down.”
“Yeah, you’re lucky I got to you in time and pulled you out. Damn thing nearly blew up in my face, and hell, the last thing I need is more scar tissue.” Clay smiled a half smile, but the joke seemed to be lost on the young pilot. She peered at the floor where she was sat, head down, strands of her long blond fringe covering her face. Clay thought he heard sobbing. Shaking his head, he pulled her upright by her arm.
