Gears of War 3 “Fate of Carmine” a Top Child’s Play Donor in 2010

Cary, NC, January 14, 2011 — The Child’s Play Charity announced that it raised a record $2,294,317 in 2010, bringing the foundation’s lifetime total to just shy of $9 million. Championed by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade, the charity enlists gamers to donate games, movies, and books for sick and hospitalized children around the world. Holkins commented on the year’s success, “I hardly know how to respond to it. The world may be a better place than I previously thought.”

Leading the charge this year were some of the biggest names in the games industry, including Epic Games with its Gears of War 3 “Fate of Carmine” Campaign, which raised $150,000 for Child’s Play. Epic launched the campaign to decide the fate of Gears of War 3’s Clayton Carmine, the third Carmine brother to appear in the award-winning series, putting the famous family’s future in the hands of the fans. Thousands of t-shirts – both for gamers themselves and their Xbox 360 avatars – declaring “Carmine Must Die” or “Save Carmine” were sold. All proceeds went to Child’s Play.

Fans will learn of Clayton Carmine’s fate when Gears of War 3 ships, which is currently set for Fall 2011.

“The fan response has been overwhelming,” said Epic Games Executive Producer Rod Fergusson. “That the Gears community has come together in such a way is remarkable and really speaks to the passion of the people who play our games. We are so honored to have made an impact for this exceptional charity.”

Child’s Play sees the most coverage over the holiday season, but it’s important to note that wishlists remain on Amazon and donations are accepted year-round through PayPal.
