Infinity Blade Named as Editor’s Choice Best iPhone/iPad Game of the Year by 1UP
Infinity Blade has been named 1UP’s Editor’s Choice Best iPhone/iPad Game of the Year. The game also received runner up honors in their Readers’ Choice division in the same category.
Infinity Blade has received praise from many premier gaming publications, and 1UP recognized the game’s potential very early on. Writing in November 2010, Thierry Nguyen of 1UP noted in his article “How Infinity Blade for iPhone Might be Epic’s Most Significant Game,” that this new direction was certainly a surprise: “…while a game like Gears of War 3 or Bulletstorm are expected to be big, successful projects from Epic, to see a handheld swordfighting game from the folks who made Shadow Complex is one heck of a curveball.” But Nguyen concluded, “With the staggering number of Apple devices out there, it’s safe to say that if Infinity Blade turns out to be a success, it could help usher in more ‘core’ games and, ultimately, become one of Epic’s most important titles.”
After its December 2010 release, multiple media outlets reported that Infinity Blade became the fastest iPhone app of all time to reach the million dollar mark, bringing in over $1.6 million in just four days. In addition to accolades from 1UP, the game has been nominated for an Excellence in Design Award by the IMGA, won IGN’s iPhone Game of the Year award for 2010, and even been the inspiration of a Penny Arcade comic strip.
1UP highlighted the reasoning behind the Editor’s Choice award this way: “While a great many games are simple-and-addictive, and others (like RAGE HD) are pretty-but-a-bit-shallow, it’s Infinity Blade that manages to show off all the best qualities of iOS (and modern console) gaming simultaneously. In short, it’s not just a really good iOS game – it’s a damn good (and good-looking) game that just happens to be on iOS.”
“This is a very exciting time for us,” says Donald Mustard, creative director of ChAIR Entertainment. “Our goal with Infinity Blade was to provide an unrivaled experience on the iOS platform, and to have both critics and players alike recognize that is truly an honor.”
The first update to Infinity Blade was released in late December 2010, with a multiplayer addition announced for later in 2011.
